  2. Actually, I just googled it and the first hit, wikipedia, says this:

"Discrimination is a sociological term referring to the treatment taken toward or against a person of a certain group in consideration based solely on class or category."

I have a problem with that being the most common definition. Discrimination is an important skill that we should all strive to develop. Hopefully we won't discriminate irrationally and immorally "against a person of a certain group.... based solely on class or category." But that is really a fraction of was it actually means to discriminate. Definition drift (just made that up--anyone know an actual term for misapplication, misappropriation, etc. of words?) is a huge pet peeve.

  3. I think the crafters of the definition approached the concept from the view that any action taken toward an individual based solely on membership in a certain group is inherently irrational. I would tend to think it would probably also be immoral.

Also, I note the definition does not distinguish between actions taken which might be pleasant, and actions which might be unpleasant. Presumably either would be seen as irrational and immoral.

Then again, The Onion reminds us that stereotypes are a big timesaver ;)
